Assignment 16: Manual Photography Vocabulary
Photography uses a specific set of vocabulary to describe how a camera captures light and creates images. In this activity, you will use a 4‑square graphic organizer to explore important manual camera terms. Depending on the assignment you choose, for each term you will write the definition in your own words, include a visual or example, and explain how the term affects a photograph. Understanding these vocabulary words will help you take more control of your camera and make intentional choices when shooting in manual mode.
Aperture – The opening in the lens that lets light into the camera. A wider aperture lets in more light and creates a blurry background.
Shutter Speed – How long the camera’s shutter stays open to capture light. Fast speeds freeze motion; slow speeds blur motion.
ISO – The camera sensor’s sensitivity to light. Low ISO is cleaner; high ISO works in low light but adds grain.
Exposure – How bright or dark a photo is, based on aperture, shutter speed, and ISO working together.
Depth of Field – How much of the photo is in focus from front to back. Shallow depth of field blurs the background.
Focus – Adjusting the lens so the subject appears sharp and clear.
White Balance – Adjusts colors so white objects look white under different lighting conditions.
Manual Mode (M) – A camera mode where the photographer controls aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. You may know some of these already and others may be new. Use whatever online resources at your disposal to complete one of these activities:
